Virtual Organization…

by Lanel Taylor on November 13th, 2006

So, you want to enter the virtual world. Welcome. One of the struggles many people face when trying out the “virtual” side of things is how to keep track of all your information. This is part one of many reviews I’ll be posting on free and low-cost options for the virtual world.

One site I use ALL THE TIME is BackPackIt. Seriously, the first thing I do every morning is open my e-mail, myHours, and BackPackIt. Those are open all day — they don’t get closed until I’m REALLY done with work for the day. I’ll do reviews on the others at a later date but let me talk a little about BackPackIt today.

The site allows you to store information online to be accessed from any computer and to also share information/files with other people. There is a free option but honestly you’ll get the most use out of it (and be happiest with it) if you upgrade to at least a basic account ($5/month). The basic account lets you upload files which is an awesome tool. With either version (free or paid) you can create notes and to-do lists on the site.

The best part is the share feature. I have clients that I share pages with. They upload a file, note, or to-do list and I have everything I need to get the job done quickly. I then can update them on the status of the job or questions I have.

VA’s…I highly recommend this as a tool to use with your clients — set up a page for each client to share file/information/notes with them.

Small businesses…this is a great way to share files with your virtual assistant, employees, or customers.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

Till later…

I totally agree with you. Backpackit saves me so MUCH of energy, just being able to have all the information for a project all together is an amazingly simple, yet useful thing!

What a great resource. It could also be really useful for volunteer committees. I recently was involved in a fundraiser gala. We were sending files back and forth (and corrupting them in the process). This would have saved so much effort!

Thanks Lanel! Someone mentioned BackPackIt at the VA conference in Dallas recently (probably Candy in fact), but I hadn’t checked it out yet. I’ll start investigaing tomorrow for sure.

Also, just began using myHours today. It seems to be a little “buggy”, sending me back to the login screen a lot. Plus I can’t seem to tie tasks back to a specific project & client. Any tips on using that service?
